2023 ECOP Canada Ocean Decade Photo Competition Winners Announced
In celebration of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, SOI Foundation, Canadian Geographic and Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOP) Canada joined forces to host an exhilarating photo competition. The submissions were nothing short of awe-inspiring!
With over 300 entries spanning four categories, the competition showcased incredible photos submitted by those who identify as early-career ocean professionals in Canada. Categories included “Unexpected Encounters,” “Ocean Solutions,” “The Blue Future,” and “The Things We Do For the Ocean.” A grand prize winner was selected on the basis of outstanding images submitted to multiple categories. From lobster fishers at dawn to the majestic flight of northern gannets, each photo captured the essence of the ocean industry.
Congratulations to Liam Brennan from Carp, ON for wowing the judges and earning the grand prize: a chance to join the media team on a summer expedition with Students on Ice! With an incredible 21 entries across the four categories, Liam showcased numerous skills and styles that lend themselves to the SOI expedition experience.
SOI’s Blue Futures Pathways program was the lead sponsor of the “Blue Future” category, which Nancy Shields from Gibsons, B.C. won with their thought-provoking shot of a ferry docking at the Langdale Ferry Terminal. The photo reminds viewers of the delicate balance between coastal communities and marine ecosystems.
Tara Mascarenhas, Director of Programs at the SOI Foundation, expressed her excitement, “It has been really inspiring to see all of the talent showcased in this competition. We are delighted to support the grand prize winner in creating their next portfolio on one of our ocean expeditions.”
