La philosophie des jeunes participants

Les jeunes candidats doivent démontrer qu’ils veulent participer pour les bonnes raisons. Il ne s’agit pas d’un camp de vacances, mais plutôt d’une expérience d’apprentissage qui requiert du temps, de l’énergie, de la passion et de la curiosité. L’expédition débute avant même le grand départ par de la lecture de contenu préexpédition et se poursuit après la fin du voyage alors que les participants deviennent des membres à part entière de la grande communauté mondiale des anciens de SOI. Nos groupes d’expédition sont constitués de toutes sortes de jeunes. Nos programmes d’expédition favorisent la diversité de genre, de race, d’ethnicité, et de géographie et portent une attention particulière aux communautés de jeunes noires, autochtones et de groupes sous-représentés. Parmi nos participants, certains jeunes ont trouvé leurs voix et cherchent à rencontrer des gens aux intérêts similaires, alors que d’autres jeunes se questionnent quant à leur avenir et ont besoin d’un coup de pouce pour aller de l’avant. La diversité de nos équipes contribue grandement à toute la magie qui s’opère durant nos programmes d’expéditions.

Scholarship Application Process

SOI is dedicated to trying to make its programs accessible to youth, regardless of their background. Scholarships are available for the majority of spots on expedition programs, thanks to our generous partners, sponsors and supporters. Carefully review the eligibility criteria for each program of interest.

Each program will have specific scholarship criteria. Please review the Upcoming Expeditions to learn more about the eligibility for our programs.

To apply for a scholarship, you must simply submit your application, indicating you would like to apply for a scholarship (as part of your application), by the application deadline.
Applications for scholarships will not be accepted past the application deadline to be fair to all applicants. You will automatically be entered into the relevant scholarship pools.
If you are shortlisted for a scholarship that requires additional information after you have submitted your application, you will receive an email asking you to submit additional information to continue to be considered for the scholarship.

All scholarship applications are reviewed by an external scholarship review committee, anonymously. The criteria for evaluating the applications will be noted on the Expedition page.
Successful scholarship recipients will be notified by phone and/or email. Please ensure this information is up to date in your application.
Be sure to double check your email address and your phone number on your application to ensure you do not miss important information.

Self-Funded Application Process

Self-funded participants are those who are able to fund their own participation.

There are typically a select number of spaces available to youth who wish to fund their own participation or fundraise to cover their fee (see Fundraising tab)

Self-funded participants are still required to submit an application to the program, indicating that you will fund your participation, and are subject to a formal review process.
We recommend that you apply as soon as possible, to ensure there will be a spot available to you.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, once the application is submitted and complete with both references. Ensuring the references are completed is the responsibility of the applicant.

Payment Details once Accepted

A non-refundable deposit of $1,000 is required within 10 business days of your acceptance in order to reserve your place on expedition.
Generally, 50% of the expedition fee is due at least 120 days prior to departure and final balances are due at least 60 days prior to departure.
All payments received within 120 days or more prior to the departure date are refundable, with the exception of the $1000 non-refundable deposit.
When cancellations are received within 119 days of the departure date, payments are not refundable. We recommend that students purchase cancellation insurance.

Fundraising Application Process

Some youth take on the challenge of fundraising to cover the cost of their participation. This is a large undertaking and applicants will be expected to provide a detailed plan of how they will be successful. There are typically a select number of spaces available to youth who wish to fundraise to cover their fee or fund their own participation.

Fundraising participants are still required to submit an application to the program and are subject to a formal review process.
We recommend that you apply as soon as possible, to ensure there will be a spot available to you and you have the time to gather the funds necessary to participate.
At times, youth who are not successful in applying for a scholarship wish to switch to a fundraising participant. This is subject to availability of spaces in the program and the submission of a fundraising plan.

We try to assist youth as much as possible in their goal of fundraising for their participation. If accepted as a fundraising participant, we will connect with you to discuss resources available to you.

Given the unique challenges of fundraising a large sum, expedition fee payment schedules may be customized to meet participant needs and financial capabilities.

We recommend that students purchase cancellation insurance.

Complete each section of the online application form. You can save and return to your form at any time prior to submission.
Submit your application prior to the deadline.
Please be patient while we process your application.

If you are applying for a scholarship, the review process begins after the deadline. Unfortunately, due to the high volume of applications, we are not able to provide feedback on your application. You will be notified by the SOI Foundation if you are selected as a participant by phone and/or email.
