Youth on Board the Sustainable Blue Economy: Maya Nowlan

Maya Nowlan is a third-year Public Relations student at Mount St. Vincent University. She recently completed an internship at The Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship (COVE) in Dartmouth, NS.

Maya is working with other interns for DeepSense, a program that connects ocean-related companies with data and ocean scientists for AI and machine learning applications in the ocean economy.

“This position has allowed me to combine two passions of mine – my love of earth sciences and the ocean with communications,” she said. “The ocean is a vast resource that has yet to meet its full potential, and being in the Atlantic provinces allows us the tremendous opportunity to access the ocean and in turn learn from it and use it in meaningful ways.”

This summer, Maya is helping DeepSense develop a mentorship program aimed at increasing student engagement in the ocean sector.

“Connecting with and involving interested students early on will ensure a steady stream of talent into the ocean sector, and will invite progress and innovation to the industry through the fresh knowledge, skill sets and mindsets that these new students will bring to the workforce. I am excited to be a part of this investment for the future of ocean innovation.”

COVE selected 21 students for the 2021 cohort of its Internship program, supported by Blue Futures Pathways.

The Blue Futures Pathways team will regularly post stories of youth, educators and employers who are “On Board” the Sustainable Blue Economy. Do you want to share your story or get involved? Send us an e-mail here
