SOI Foundation Partners with Innu Nation for Ocean Expedition

GATINEAU, QC – June 29, 2023  – From June 29 – July 19, 2023, the Students on Ice (SOI) Foundation, in partnership with the Innu Nation, Innu youth from the communities of Sheshatshiu and Natuashish, will be embarking on a unique education and research expedition to explore and expand the understanding of Innu Nation’s coastal and marine zones. The ship-based journey includes activities to help protect the health of these areas and collaboratively support the future of Innu marine protected areas through the collection of local knowledge and baseline data.

The expedition brings together youth, Elders, Guardians, scientists, researchers, musicians, artists, and community members, creating a unique, first-hand learning experience focused on the importance of Indigenous-led management and protection as well as developing the capacity and skills within the Innu communities to support these efforts.

“Innu Nation is pleased to partner with Fisheries and Oceans Canada to conduct ocean and marine studies in Innu Nation’s marine zones. We are also excited that Students on Ice has joined with us to provide our youth with an opportunity to participate in an SOI program, tailored to Innu youth, which will also see their involvement in marine monitoring and data collection. Additionally, Innu Nation’s Park’s staff will offer a unique opportunity to visit Akami-Uapishkᵁ-KakKasuak (Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve) and the Wunderstrands, and other areas along the coast of Labrador.”
