EVENT: Western Arctic Youth Collective Film Premiere (May 6-7)

The Western Arctic Youth Collective (WAYC) is hosting a Film Premiere & Awareness Fundraiser on the traditional territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwach’an Council in Whitehorse, Yukon. This event will take place at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre May 6-7, 2023.

From WAYC:

“WAYC was created by youth for youth with connections to the Western Arctic regions of the Northwest Territories (NT) and YT. WAYC strives to create opportunities to prepare and support on-going development to improve the lives of Indigenous young people by empowering them to be changemakers by providing a platform of youth-led collaborative initiatives and partnerships in their communities and with other like-minded groups in other northern regions. WAYC is a project on MakeWay’s Charitable Society’s Shared Platform as of March 2020. In 2020, WAYC was one of the Arctic Inspiration Prize youth laureates.

From 2018 to 2023, WAYC has hosted a number of youth-led programming initiatives across the Western Arctic and has captured some programming in short films, such as wellness gatherings, cultural and land-based activities, and youth leadership retreats. WAYC wants to share the beautiful and intentional community work with others. Our team is often referred to as local innovators, changemakers, community connectors, and social entrepreneurs. The biggest honor many of us hear is that we are the aunties and uncles youth needed when we were younger, so we create opportunities to mentor them along our journey. We love what we do and accept the responsibility of community grass-level work. However, we need help as our team experiences exhaustion, burnout, vicarious trauma, lateral violence, and lack of consistent core equitable funding. This event is a chance for us to showcase our values and reflections learned in our programming efforts from youth and intergenerational learners, helpers, and supporters on this journey. We hope you can come and support and share this event within your networks.

WAYC will be having on-site donations opportunities and a silent auction. If you and your organization/business would like to donate to WAYC for our silent auction, please let us know. As a project of MakeWay, there is an option for charity tax receipts as well for financial contributions. For donations, WAYC will acknowledge the donation on promotional materials prior and after the event and in-person during the event for all community members to hear about the support our group receives.”
