Employment Opportunity: Expedition Assistant
Position Summary
The Expedition Assistant will work alongside the Expedition Team to prepare students and staff for SOI’s 2024 expedition season. As an integral member of the Home Team at SOI Headquarters, this role requires excellent communications and administration skills, the ability to multi-task and superior attention to detail.
This is a full-time position at the Students on Ice office in Gatineau, QC (in the Ottawa area). The role will begin with a minimum of three (3) days per week in office during the month of May, moving to five days per week in the office in June, July, and August.
While all applications are welcome, preference will be given to Students on Ice alumni.
- Term: May 01 to August 31, 2024 (exact dates to be determined)
- Hours: 7.5 hours per day, 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday*
* Work during evenings and weekends will be required.
The position will report directly to the Expedition Team Lead.
Key Responsibilities
Supporting the Expedition Program by:
- Assisting with the formal registration process, including making phone calls to parents, staff, and students, data entry and cross-checking, booking travel, assisting with passport applications, scanning and printing, and responding to inquiries;
- Assist in organizing and packing expedition inventory. This includes ordering and managing SWAG, counting and labelling inventory, creating lists of supplies, cleaning and unpacking gear, and at times, lifting heavy boxes;
- Contribute to the execution of the pre-expedition program, including on-site event support in Ottawa, collaborating with vendors, and assisting with cleanup.
- Provide assistance during the expedition period (the Home Team), including answering calls, finalizing and changing bookings, and supporting ongoing events.

- Efficient multi-tasker, who enjoys managing spreadsheets, creating lists and organizing
- Excellent problem solver who welcomes new tasks and challenges;
- Great communicator with excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to liaise with people from various backgrounds;
- Adaptable to change, diplomatic and patient with a positive outlook;
- Knowledge of, and experience with, the Canadian Arctic and Inuit culture an asset;
- Fluency in French and/or Inuktitut an asset.
